2008 Vocal Music Scholarship Competition

The Cedar Rapids Choral Association is proud to announce our 6th
annual Vocal Music Scholarship Competition. This scholarship is
open to all Eastern Iowa High School Seniors who are planning on
attending an accredited college and majoring in Music or Music
Education in the fall of 2008. The scholarship competition will
occur on Sunday, January 27, 2008, beginning at 2:00 pm in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa. We will award a $1,000.00 scholarship, and an
additional $500.00 scholarship may be awarded to a runner-up if
there are greater than 15 contestants.
• The Scholarship Competition will be held on Sunday, January
27, 2008 in Marquis Hall on the campus of Coe College in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa.
• The competition winner will be awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship
and a featured soloist at one of our concerts.
• The scholarship check will be presented upon documentation of
matriculation to an accredited college for the fall term,
majoring in either Music or Music Education.

2008 Scholarship Details
Who is eligible?
• Any Eastern Iowa student preparing to enter his/her freshman
year in an accredited college or university program in Music or
Music Education is eligible.
• All competitors must be a resident of one of the following
Iowa counties: Allamakee, Appanoose, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer,
Buchanan, Butler, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clarke,
Clayton, Davis, Decatur, Delaware, Des Moines, Dubuque, Fayette,
Floyd, Franklin, Grundy, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry,
Howard, Iowa, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones,
Keokuk, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Lucas, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall,
Mitchell, Monroe, Muscatine, Polk, Poweshiek, Scott, Story,
Tama, Van Buren, Wapello, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Winnebago,
Winneshiek, Worth, Wright.
Competition Requirements:
• All competitors will prepare two selections taken from two of
the areas listed below. Only one selection from a particular
area may be chosen.
(1) One Aria from an opera or operetta
(2) One Aria from an oratorio
(3) Song(s) in Italian, French Chansons/Mélodie, German Lieder
and/or songs in English.
• At least one of the two selections must be performed from
memory. Stand music is permitted for the other.
• Songs from Musical Theater are not permitted.
• All competitors must provide their own accompanist.
• Contestants will provide 3 copies of each piece of music for
the judges. These may be photocopies and will be returned after
the event).
Rules and Procedures:
• Time slots are 15 minutes per contestant. The judges may limit
the length of each selection. Contestants may be stopped at any
time during a selection by the “head judge” so that all
selections can be heard and we can keep on schedule.) Keep this
in mind when selecting music or sections to present.
• The competition performances will be held in a recital setting
and closed to the public.
• Private warm-up rooms with pianos will be provided before
judging.
• The competition may also be recorded (audio/video) for the use
of the Choral Association, but will not be used by the judges
during the competition.
• Music used by judges may be picked up after the competition
judging is completed.
• Adjudication forms from the judges will be provided to
contestants within two weeks of the competition.
• Scholarship Award winners will be posted on our website and
contacted by mail. Contestant information and photos will be
announced in area media.
• The winners will receive the scholarship award for the
following fall college term. The scholarship(s) will be paid in
one payment, co-payable to the winner and educational
institution, upon receiving documentation of enrollment in an
accredited college Music or Music Education program from the
student’s institution.
